Gannet Vireo Avery is the brother of Maren Merle Black nee Avery and the uncle of Cassiopeia Black. He died before Cassiopeia was born, sacrificing his life to save Maren.

It is implied that Maren and Gannet were close when they were children, and may have often played together.

It is likely Gannet attended Hogwarts, though his House is unknown.
First Wizarding War and Death[]
Although the date is unknown, Gannet joined Voldemort and became a Death Eater, likely participating in many raids. One on raid, Voldemort engaged his sister in a duel, who was fighting on the side of the Order of the Phoenix. Before Voldemort could kill Maren, Gannet protected her, giving his life in the process. It is unknown why Gannet turned on Voldemort.
